Best free WHOIS lookup tools

AdminKit's Whois/RDAP tool runs a free, no-account, browser-direct lookup for a domain or IP with no historical archive, monitoring or API; who.is adds 2B+ historical Whois/RDAP snapshots since 2007 plus paid domain-monitoring alerts and a JSON API, while whois.com and MXToolbox WHOIS each run a similar free live lookup without who.is's deeper feature set, per their own pages verified 2026-11-04.

AdminKit is built by Netbase JSC. AdminKit is listed below; who.is, whois.com and MXToolbox are independent and not affiliated with AdminKit.

Two names considered, not included

DomainTools’ Whois Lookup (whois.domaintools.com) and ICANN’s Lookup tool (lookup.icann.org) were both considered for this roundup. Both pages returned an HTTP 200 response on 2026-11-04 — no bot-detection block — but both are client-side-rendered single-page applications: the raw HTML is a boilerplate shell (a <title>, a one-line <meta name="description">, and a JavaScript bundle that renders the actual tool after it loads). Without executing that JavaScript, there is no server-rendered body text to confirm what fields a result shows, whether an account is required, or what a paid tier includes, so rather than guess, both are left out of the table below entirely.

What each tool’s own page confirms

who.is, read 2026-11-04, runs free WHOIS, RDAP, DNS, nameserver and IP lookups directly from its homepage search box, no account required for a single lookup. It goes further than a one-off check: its own page states “2B+ Historical WHOIS & RDAP snapshots Since 2007” and “20 years of domain data,” and lists three paid-leaning products — Website Monitoring (“free on 1 domain, up to 10 with Plus”), Domain Watch alerts (“part of the Pro plan”), and an API (“Parsed WHOIS, normalized RDAP, and DNS and TLS-certificate history… Start on the free tier, no card required”). See AdminKit vs who.is for the full head-to-head on these points.

whois.com, read 2026-11-04, runs a free Whois/IP search directly from its homepage, with no login required to see a result — its own page describes “real-time data from authoritative WHOIS sources.” It doesn’t mention historical snapshots, monitoring or an API anywhere on this page. What it does prominently market on the same page is domain registration and hosting: its own page lists domain registration, Linux/Windows hosting “starts at just $1.68/mo,” business email, SSL certificates and a website builder as paid add-ons — a domain registrar’s lookup tool, not a dedicated Whois product.

MXToolbox’s Whois Lookup Tool, read 2026-11-04, runs a free lookup directly on the page with no login shown. Its own page states plainly: “This test will return WHOIS registration results for a DOMAIN name… who is it registered to, when it was registered and when it expires, where the DNS is hosted, and more.” The page’s footer links to an “API” page but doesn’t describe what it contains, and nothing on this specific page mentions historical snapshots or paid monitoring.

AdminKit’s Whois/RDAP tool fetches the live RDAP record directly from your browser via the public rdap.org proxy, without AdminKit’s servers seeing the query: registrar, key dates, status codes and nameservers for a domain, or the allocated range and registry for an IP. It is a current-state-only lookup, by design — no historical archive, no monitoring product and no API today, and it doesn’t sell domain registration or hosting on the same page.

The honest angle

If you need past registration snapshots, change-alert monitoring, or a programmatic API, who.is’s own page states it has all three today and AdminKit doesn’t — see AdminKit vs who.is for that comparison in full. If you’re shopping for a domain and want the Whois check bundled with registration and hosting, whois.com’s own page is built around that. If you want a quick, no-account current-state lookup with no upsell on the same page, that’s what AdminKit’s Whois/RDAP tool and MXToolbox’s Whois tool both offer — see how to read a Whois/RDAP lookup result for what the fields in any of these tools’ output actually mean, or domain expiry and renewal check if the expiry date is what you’re tracking.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page ranking who.is, whois.com and MXToolbox WHOIS from best to worst?

No. A free live-only lookup, a historical-archive-plus-monitoring-plus-API product, and a domain-registrar's bundled lookup solve different problems, so a single best-to-worst order would misrepresent what each is for. The table below states only what each tool's own page confirms, so you can match the tool to what you actually need.

AdminKit already has a page comparing it to who.is directly — why a second comparison?

The two pages answer different questions. [AdminKit vs who.is](/compare/vs-who-is/) is a one-on-one deep dive into who.is's historical archive, monitoring and API pricing. This page is the wider category roundup: how AdminKit's lookup stacks up against who.is, whois.com and MXToolbox WHOIS side by side. Nothing here is claimed again in more detail than the head-to-head page already covers — see that page for who.is's full breakdown.

Why doesn't this comparison include DomainTools' Whois Lookup or ICANN's Lookup tool?

Both pages returned an HTTP 200 response on 2026-11-04, so neither was blocked, but both are client-side-rendered single-page applications: a plain GET returns only a boilerplate HTML shell (a page title, a one-line meta description, and a JavaScript bundle) with no server-rendered body text describing the live tool's result fields, account requirements or pricing. Rather than execute the page's client-side JavaScript or guess at features from memory, this comparison leaves both tools out of the table entirely instead of citing unverified claims.

Does AdminKit's Whois/RDAP tool keep historical records or offer paid monitoring like who.is?

No. who.is's own homepage advertises '2B+ Historical WHOIS & RDAP snapshots Since 2007' plus a paid Website Monitoring and Domain Watch product. AdminKit's Whois/RDAP tool only shows the current live record, fetched fresh from the registry each time via the public RDAP network, with no historical archive and no monitoring or alerting product today — see [AdminKit vs who.is](/compare/vs-who-is/) for the full comparison on that point.

Does this page use who.is's, whois.com's or MXToolbox's logo or brand assets?

No. All three names are used only to identify and compare publicly available services (nominative use). AdminKit is not affiliated with or endorsed by who.is, whois.com, or MXToolbox, Inc.
